Christian Counseling - Technology Fast

I recently returned from vacation. Over the next several posts, I will discuss some of the thoughts that occurred to me as well as some of the lessons that I learned while on vacation. First, while I was away, I believe the God conspired against me in some way. It seemed that I was on a God imposed technology fast. I had no internet access. My cell phone hardly worked at all. Thanks to a dead battery, it did not work at all for the first couple days of vacation. This retreat from technology was not intentional. However, it taught me a few things about myself.

First, I am hooked on technology. I found myself somewhat anxious at how disconnected from people and information I had become. This was after about only 24 hours.

Second, I realized that while I was placing a value on staying connected with people, there were times when my connection with others through technology was hindering my connection with my family.

Third, while spending time enjoying man's creation (technology), I was missing out on the beauty and serenity of God's creation. By unplugging on vacation, I was able to enjoy what God has made for us without distraction.

This unintentional "technology fast" has led me to be more intentional about abstaining from technology on a regular basis. Yes, technology can be very helpful in our lives and, when used appropriately, can make us more productive. However, it is also used to often distract and even disconnect us from life around us. Think about taking a technology fast for yourself or even your whole family. You may be surprised by what you discover.
